From an Old Jacket to Something New - A Keepsake Project

A few thoughts from my workshop by the sea.

Some projects arrive in my sewing room as an idea.

Others arrive carrying a whole history with them.

A little while ago, I received a message through my website from a gentleman asking whether I could do something rather unusual. His wife had an old jacket that had belonged to her father, and rather than leaving it tucked away somewhere, he wondered whether I could turn it into a bag she could actually use.

Of course, my first thought was: I'd love to try.

The jacket itself was wonderful. It was an old adventure-style jacket with detachable sleeves, lots of pockets and some fantastic original details. On one side was a Camel Trophy Guyana '92 patch, on the other a green Land Rover patch, with another Camel Trophy Adventure Wear label inside.

And because this wasn't simply an old piece of clothing, but something with sentimental value, cutting into it for the first time was slightly nerve-racking!

Making the Most of What Was Already There

Rather than treating the jacket as just a piece of fabric, I wanted the finished bag to still feel connected to what it had been.

So wherever possible, I kept and reused the original details.

Pockets became useful parts of the new design. Clips from the sleeves found another purpose. The original patches stayed visible, and instead of hiding the character of the jacket, I tried to build the new bag around it.

The request was for a rucksack, lined with brown cotton fabric, and slowly the old jacket began turning into something completely different.

But then I realised something rather nice.

There was enough fabric left for another bag.

So those remaining pieces became a small crossbody bag, again using as many of the jacket's original features as possible.

One old jacket had become two useful bags.

And Then... Back to the Sewing Machine 😂

When the bags were finished, I was delighted with them — and thankfully, so was their new owner.

But handmade projects don't always finish quite where you think they will.

Once the rucksack was actually being used, it became clear that a small adjustment would make it work better.

So...

Back it came.

And yes, parts of my beautifully finished bag had to be taken apart again. 😂

A little unpicking, a little muttering at the sewing machine, some alterations and then putting everything carefully back together.

Not perhaps the glamorous side of making things by hand, but an important one.

Because ultimately, it isn't about making something that looks good in a photograph.

It has to work for the person carrying it.

More Than Just an Old Jacket - A Keepsake Project

This project has stayed with me because it reminded me that upcycling isn't always about rescuing something from being thrown away.

Sometimes an object is kept precisely because it means too much to throw away.

But it can still spend years sitting unworn in a wardrobe.

Turning this jacket into two bags meant that the familiar patches, pockets and fabric could become part of everyday life again — just in a completely different form.

And I think that's rather lovely.

The jacket hasn't disappeared.

From Jacket to Bag -> old memories remembered to new ones to be made

It's simply gone on another adventure.

Projects like this are sometimes known as memory or keepsake projects — transforming a meaningful piece of clothing into something new that can continue to be used and enjoyed.
