The Bag That Nearly Didn't Happen - Custom Handmade Sailcloth Bag

Behind the Seams When wrong measures make nice bags.

One of the things I love most about making handmade bags is that every project has its own story. Most go exactly to plan... and then there are the ones that keep you on your toes.

It all started with a lovely message from a customer in Australia who had discovered my Etsy shop. She was looking for a larger bag for her snorkelling holidays and wondered if I had a more colourful sail available than the one she'd originally seen.

As luck would have it, I had just the sail.

It was bright, bold and full of character, with two large yellow circles, striking blue numbers and a big blue letter. I couldn't wait to start working with it.

After chatting about the size she needed, I measured the sail carefully and worked out that I had enough material to make not just one bag, but two. That meant I could give her a choice.

Perfect! A Custom Handmade Sailcloth Bag is always something to be proud of.

Or so I thought...

Once I'd finished sewing the first bag, something didn't feel right.

I checked the measurements.

Then I checked them again.

I'd made a mistake.

The bags were too small.

I won't pretend there wasn't a moment of panic. The sail was so beautiful, and I'd already promised my customer a colourful oversized bag. I honestly thought I might have used too much material.

Thankfully, the next morning, after a fresh cup of tea and another careful look at the sail, I measured everything again.

To my great relief, there was enough sailcloth left after all.

Not only could I make the larger bag I'd promised, but there was also enough material to keep the wonderful yellow markings and bold blue numbers on both sides. There was even enough left to make a matching zipped pouch for a phone, wallet and other little essentials.

The finished bag was everything I'd hoped it would be.

I sent photographs to my customer in Australia, and she loved it.

Moments like these remind me why handmade is never quite the same as mass production. Every sail is different, every project brings its own little challenges, and sometimes the best bags are the ones that nearly didn't happen.

Thankfully, this one made it all the way from my workshop in Dorset to its new adventures on the other side of the world.
